The Project "Waste Heat Smartly: Thermoacoustic Technology”, a SELECT MSc Programme "Project of the Year 2012/2013" idea, has won second place at the prestigious competition “EDP University Challenge 2013” sponsored by the company EDP Renewables, Spain


On October 24, 2013, EDP Renewables held the finale of the event in which the winners of the EDP University Challenge 2013 were announced. The award ceremony was chaired by Rocío Sicre, general director of EDP Renewables for the Spain branch.

After being selected as one of the 15 semifinalists from over 80 competing projects, a team comprised of 4 students from the KIC InnoEnergy´s MSc SELECT programme - Burkhard Hauck, Heny Kusumawardani, Davide Lora, and Daniel Negrin- presented the "Waste Heat Smartly" project in a 2-minutes Elevator Pitch. The team was selected as one of the 5 finalists of the competition.

Afterwards, the 5 finalists presented their projects in more detail to the public and the jury, comprised of Luis Polo, general director of the AEE (Wind Spanish Association), Jorge Farmyards, Ignacio Laínez, directors of Institutional Relations and Energy Evaluations for EDP Renewables Europe, respectively, and Telmo Scallop, partner of Premivalor Quality consultancy.

The winning project was entitled "Design of an offshore turbine with a structural monitoring system based on the employment of graphene" which was presented by the students of the School of Experimental Sciences and Technology of the University Rey Juan Carlos of Madrid.


The project submitted by the team "Waste Heat Smartly", which consists on using a thermoacoustic engine for recovering vehicle's waste heat to produce electricity, won first runner-up. The "Waste Heat Smartly" Team represented the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) as part of the SELECT consortium.

Finally, the third place was taken by the project "CO2 capture and storage system in transportation vehicles" presented by the students of the School of Engineering and Architecture, University of Zaragoza. Each of the winning team's received a certificate and cash price, in the form of a research grant, for both the Team and the Team's academic tutor.
