On 3 Oct 2013, all MSc SELECT students were brought together with academic and administration staff of all partner universities at UPC in Barcelona for kick-off of the Project of the Year (for the 1st year students) and the Integrated Project (for the 2nd year students).
Mrs. Neus Consul, Director of Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (ETSEIB) started the meeting by welcoming everyone to UPC. She presented the organization and ongoing activities at the institute.
Dr Thomas Nordgreen (SELECT programme Director) continued the session by welcoming the students and the SELECT faculty. He expressed his great pleasure for attending the second Kick off of PoY and IPoY.
The meeting continued with the presentation of UPC Innovation and research activities and Innovation programmes at UPC by Prof. Josep Bordonau (Education Director, KIC InnoEnergy CC Iberia) and Enrique Velo (Academic coordinator, KIC InnoEnergy CC Iberia). Thereafter, Xavier Estaran gave a presentation about entrepreneur and how to start a business.
Deputy Programme Director, Dr. Peter Hagström, presented the Project of the Year for the 1st year students. The Project of the Year 2013 is entitled “Power-to-gas to Energy Services for a Sustainable Mankind”. The students had the opportunity to choose between two sub-projects:
- How may gas and other energy carrier infrastructures be linked to each other in the most efficient way, in respect to energy and energy losses, economic and business concerns and for receiving the most optimal energy services? Explore novel systems solutions with the starting point being today’s best technology.
- Energy ships as an alternative way to the fixed off-shore wind power plants. The concept consists of ships which convert wind to a storable energy carrier, as e.g. hydrogen. The aim of this subproject is to design a system, perform a techno-economic feasibility study and make a business plan for energy ships being linked to a power-to gas system.
The presentation of the proposals of Integrated Projects by the 2nd year students were given after the lunch. Three different projects were presented:
- Scalable Pico-PV System as a Innovative Way to Replace Kerosene Lamps
- Design and analysis of a mobile power charging station in Kenya
- Development and implementation of a solar PV blind product
According to the last item in the Agenda of this day, students got the opportunity to have a group discussion with the MSc consortium and different supervisors. The students stayed in Barcelona for the presentation of 2nd year specializations by academic and admin staff on 4th of October. The second day was completed by a study visit which was arranged for the second year students.
